As many of you know, seeding has been released. Any thoughts on how some of these weight classes got seeded? Particularly through the 138 to 150 range?
I agree to a certain extent, I think the best guys will win at the weight. But where I think the main drawbacks occur with bad seeding happens to the guys who aren’t favored to win but can compete to get into the finals or just place high in general. It’s hard to criticize. I know a lot of effort goes into it. It wouldn’t be my seeding, especially considering the only DE nationally ranked wrestler is a 2 seed. But the path to the finals remains the same, just win. Some paths will be harder, but for those with lower than expected seeds, use it as a motivating force to prove the seeding gurus wrong.
I think your response is very insightful, and I definitely agree that we need to follow a criteria-based system. I think that in State wrestling should be weighed more heavily to a certain extent. I think only having duals meets on your schedule for Delaware competition would definitely need to be punished in the post-season, but when guys are going out of state and gaining those good PA and NJ teams its great for the home state. Also, when someone who is ranked in the country and placed 5th at an "in-state" Beast of the East tournament gets the second seed, I think the criteria definitely need to be reworked. I think hot starts and cold starts aren't as big an issue for this specific tournament since the issue lies within the top seeds.I don't know the criteria exactly but I know its something like H2H, Common Opponent, and past accomplishments. Programs have to balance what is more beneficial for there goals. But the way the criteria works, it favors more in state wrestling. It also favors wrestling certain guys at certain times, you can beat wrestlers who have slow starts and then everyone loses to him you will be seeded higher and vise versa if you get lost to someone who has a hot start and falls off the end of the season you will get seeded lower. At the end of the day, I would rather have a criteria that is followed than a few people sitting in a room making judgement calls. Just my opinion.
